Matthew Ramon Lopez has been an associate of Lopez McHugh since 2009. Since joining the firm, Mr. Lopez has handled numerous cases involving a wide variety of medical issues, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, medical and dental professional negligence, birth injury, elder abuse, toxic chemical exposure, and other personal injury or wrongful death actions. His compassionate and sincere nature and ability to effectively communicate with clients from all walks of life creates and fosters trust. Mr. Lopez exhibits a steadfast and dedicated approach to fighting for justice for his clients.
In 2003, Mr. Lopez graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with an emphasis on Finance. In anticipation of a legal practice involving science and medicine, Mr. Lopez also attained a minor degree in Biological Sciences.
In 2008, Mr. Lopez earned his Juris Doctorate from Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law with CALI “Excellent Achievement” awards in Legal Writing Skills and Remedies. While obtaining his law degree, Mr. Lopez interned for the Elder Law Clinic providing free legal assistance to the elderly. He appealed through written and oral argument one client’s denial of disability benefits from Social Security, overturning the court’s decision.
From inception through trial, Mr. Lopez is experienced in successfully handling complex medical negligence cases. Earlier this year, Mr. Lopez helped secure a jury verdict in a dental malpractice action tried over two weeks in Los Angeles. In 2016, Matt worked with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office where he exclusively conducted preliminary hearings and jury trials. Mr. Lopez has also authored and effectively argued many different motions and oppositions before state and federal court judges.
Lopez McHugh has a nationally-recognized pharmaceutical and medical device mass tort practice, in which Mr. Lopez plays an integral part. He has represented and helped achieve recoveries on behalf of hundreds of patients who have been injured by defective drugs and medical devices. Mr. Lopez participates in all facets of mass tort litigation for the firm, but his passions are working directly with clients, overseeing case-specific discovery, trial preparation and strategy, and implementing the liability and causation evidence to each individual case.
Mr. Lopez is admitted to practice before all of the courts of the State of California, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern Districts of California, and the United States District Court for Colorado. He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), American Association for Justice (AAJ), the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), and the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA). Mr. Lopez has been listed by Thomas Reuters’ Super Lawyers publication as a Super Lawyers Rising Star each year since 2013.
Matt was born and raised in Newport Beach, around the local beach town culture that his mother and three uncles – having grown up on Lido Isle in the 60s – helped pioneer. Matt has always loved being active and outdoors, and is passionate about the ocean, nature and wildlife. Throughout his life, Matt has participated in competitive sports. To this day, he plays in a recreational soccer league in San Clemente. Matt is also an avid guitarist who taught himself to play at a young age. Most of all, Matt enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife and colleague, Amorina, their two boys and golden retriever, Mowgli.
