Tommy James Law

Speaker Bio

Tommy James opened the doors to his personal injury law firm with the sole focus of helping those in need. Since starting his Birmingham firm, he has successfully represented wrongfully injured individuals throughout the entire state of Alabama, including children and elderly adults, of all mental capacities who suffered an injury at the hands of another person, staff members and institutions. He graduated from The Montgomery Academy in 1988 where he won academic awards and was a member of the state championship football team in 1987. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Auburn University in 1993. He later graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1997, where he was a Senior Editor of the Alabama Law Review. After law school, Tommy started practicing law at Jemison & Mendelsohn in Montgomery. He then became a partner of Jemison, Mendelsohn & James. Tommy later moved to Birmingham to join the Morris Haynes law firm. He then went on to found Tommy James Law.

Tommy has acquired many accolades during his practice, including being a prominent member of significant legal organizations such as the Alabama State Bar, the Alabama Association of Justice, the Alabama State Bar Health and Wellness Task Force and is on the advisory board of the Alabama Family Trust. He recently accepted an invitation to join the state Board of Directors of VOCAL, Victims of Crime and Leniency. VOCAL's Board primarily consists of law enforcement officials, district attorneys and crime victims. VOCAL is an advocacy group for victims of crime that focuses on reducing crime and improving the rights of crime victims. Tommy is also one of only several Alabama attorneys who is an active member of the National Crime Victim Bar Association, a national organization for lawyers dedicated to helping crime victims and their families seek justice in civil court for money damages. He has successfully litigated dozens of personal injury cases across the State of Alabama, winning his clients over $50,000,000.00 in damages over the years. He is frequently a guest on statewide newscasts as a noted expert in certain fields of personal injury; in the past, he has made appearances on Birmingham and Tuscaloosa's LawCall TV shows as well as The Attorneys TV show. Tommy is often interviewed about his high-profile cases.

Tommy is one of few lawyers who has successfully filed suit against almost every state agency in Alabama, including the Alabama Department of Mental Health, the Alabama Department of Corrections the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR),  the Alabama Department of Youth Services, the Alabama Department of Corrections, the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles and these agency's employees. With decades of experience and a proven record of success behind him, Tommy knows what it takes to build strong personal injury cases for his clients. He will do everything in his power to ensure that those who have suffered a wrongful injury due to institutional abuse, neglect, and assault (including sexual assault while in an institution) receive a favorable outcome. He also helps individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents and other incidents.

Tommy often represents clients who were injured or died in nursing homes, group homes, daycares, mental health facilities, psychiatric wards in hospitals, schools for troubled teens, foster homes, schools and other facilities.
