Virginia Buchanan is a shareholder at Levin Papantonio Rafferty, having joined the firm in 1989. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida in 1985, and received her Juris Doctorate Degree, with honors, from the University of Florida in 1989. She is a recurring member of Florida Super Lawyers and Florida Legal Elite, with an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and Top Rated Personal Injury Lawyer.
Ms. Buchanan has been active in numerous organizations and has contributed as a speaker, writer, co-chair/moderator, officer, committee appointee, or contributor to the American Bar Association, Florida Bar Association, Florida Justice Association, Alliance of Women Trial Lawyers, National Trial Lawyers, American Board of Trial Advocacy, and Alabama Justice Association. She received the Florida Bar President’s Award for pro bono service 2014, the Top 50 Women Lawyers Award via Florida Legal Trend Magazine Blue Ribbon Review Process, and the Law Dragon one of 500 Plaintiff Consumer Lawyers Award in 2019. She has also received Telly and Aegis awards for video productions.
While attending the University of Florida, Ms. Buchanan was a Bickel Scholar, Scripps-Howard Scholar and received several jurisprudence awards. She was selected to the University of Florida Moot Court Team and was a Finalist in the Florida Annual Moot Court Competition and Finalist in Benton National Moot Court Competition in Chicago, Illinois. She was selected to the Order of the Coif and to Phi Delta Phi, an honors fraternity.
Among her favorite indirect legal activities, she counts her contribution to the medical text “Complications in Anesthesiology,” Ed. E.B. Labato, N.Gravenstein andR.R. Kirby, Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, which was quoted in the book review published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, as well as being a member of a national task force member to compile guidelines regarding high school football practices and heat stroke prevention. Most recently, she has organized an annual medical conference featuring updates in thoracic medicine in honor of her mentor, Fredric G. Levin.
Ms. Buchanan has extensive experience in medical negligence and wrongful death litigation and has been lead or active co-trial counsel in numerous civil trials, approximately 50 trials to date. She has experience in arbitration, administrative and vaccine litigation as well.
